“You're not healing to be able to handle trauma. You are healing to be able to handle joy.”

When I saw this quote, I immediately said, YES! We are healing to be able to handle joy. If you are reading this, I imagine you’ve experienced trauma. Some traumatic events we may not have recognized as trauma, especially when we were younger. Research has shown us the effects of trauma are carried generationally as well. What can happen is that we become used to trauma and its effects. It is what we know. We develop coping mechanisms to survive the trauma, and they are often dysfunctional and they become normal too. We get used to these patterns in our life.

Recovery is about many things, but healing from trauma and breaking free of dysfunctional behaviors and patterns is a big part of it. Trauma is not a one-way ticket to doom. As we heal, we create room in ourselves to let in the new and healthier, and even joy.

Have you ever consciously thought about how healing through recovery allows more joy into your life? Do you want to be able to handle more joy? Take a moment and extend your arms out with me and shout, “YES!” Yes, to more: healthy patterns and behaviors, creativity, possibilities, nourishing relationships, opportunities, fun, inner peace, freedom to be more authentic and yes, more joy!
