"Sometimes you’ve just got to power down." —Rob Bell

How do you feel when you hear that statement? We all have a certain amount of responsibilities, and we naturally know what those are. We may feel we have no room to power down. And, what about those things that are under the surface—gnawing feelings we’re unable to express? Although not conscious yet, they take energy too. They can drain us like too many apps open on a cell phone drains its battery.

Sometimes when we power ourselves down, things that are unconscious become conscious. Once they are in our awareness, change begins and reduces the underlying heavy drain on our energy. Other times, we are already conscious of some underlying issues and knowingly want to conserve energy. Either way, let’s explore some simple changes we can make to help us power down.

A few ideas: on a day off work, take a break from texting and/or scrolling. Instead of listening to music when commuting or doing dishes etc., practice silence. Choose one of many possible somatic movement activities. I heard someone say the consistent form of meditation that worked for them was sitting quietly for 5 minutes a day looking at a wall. Another simple change could be cutting out optional activities for the day and take that time to allow yourself to move more slowly doing those things that aren’t optional. See (or call) someone and share things on your heart, and allow the synergy of connection to actually create energy. Partner with your Higher Power and be open to guidance.

Powering down doesn’t need to be “another thing to do or figure out.” Give yourself a little space to feel and let things naturally arise within you. It then becomes a space where answers/awarenesses may come to you, or where not knowing feels less stressful. Either way, I believe you’ll be shockingly empowered when you allow yourself to power down!
